Handmade spurs with boot straps, c. 19th century

350 USD

Spurs—the inspiration for the shape of our custom precious metal eyewear rivets—have been used by riders since ancient times, with evidence of their use dating back to the 5th century B.C. by the Celts and the Roman Empire. Early spurs were likely made of bone or wood, with iron and bronze versions used by the Romans. Spanish explorers brought their elaborate spur designs to the Americas in the 15th century. These designs heavily influenced the development of modern spurs used by vaqueros (Mexican cowboys) and later, American cowboys, becoming a key tool for cowboys to signal commands to their horses, and a lasting and iconic symbol of the American West.
