Originally released in Summer 2017, the Jax emerged from Jacques Marie Mage's fascination with the unruly energy of postwar New York, when Jackson Pollock abandoned the easel for the floor and turned industrial enamel, gravity, and motion into unlikely collaborators. Working inside a converted barn in Springs, Long Island, Pollock moved around the canvas rather than standing before it, building his celebrated drip paintings through an improvisational process that forever altered the course of American art. His paintings soon came to embody the restless ambition of a city entering a new cultural era, one in which American artists no longer looked abroad for permission to define the future of modern art.
Familiar at first glance, the Jax gradually reveals a far more considered construction. Its classic 1950s proportions are sharpened by generous bevels, exposed wirecores, and precious-metal details that continually shift the eye from one surface to the next, much as Pollock's paintings refuse to settle into a single point of focus.
The Rover color story bestows the spectacle with added richness, evoking a midcentury New York where ideas were tested as fiercely over drinks at the Cedar Tavern as they were on canvas, only to begin again and again and again...
