Boyish beneath a white racing helmet, Paul Newman brings his familiar, slightly wayward charm to these original negatives from 1970, presented alongside two black-and-white photographs. Fresh from the roguish pleasures of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, he carried an easy, rumpled glamour into a decade when Hollywood’s leading men were spending ever more of their time chasing speed.
Training with Bob Bondurant for Winning (1969), Newman had taken eagerly to the wheel, practicing whenever he could, circling Indianapolis with an appetite that outlasted the day’s work. Co-star Robert Wagner remembered wanting to ease off while Newman wanted more. That eager pupil would go on to win national championships and finish second at Le Mans, carrying his love of driving well into old age.
The photographs belong to the beginning of that long affair, with its weekends given over to racing and the absorbing pleasure of getting a little better, a little faster. Newman’s sidelong smile retains the mischief of his screen performances, already familiar to audiences who had watched him charm his way through trouble and cheerfully invite some more.
