Pontiac put the GTO on the street in 1964, and Ronny & the Daytonas answered from the radio. Written by John “Bucky” Wilkin, the son of Nashville songwriter Marijohn Wilkin, “G.T.O.” caught the car just as its three initials became shorthand for youth and horsepower. The command “turn it on, wind it up, blow it out” made an engine sing in the blunt syllables of a teenage catechism, carrying the single to number four on the Billboard chart.
The album built a whole roadside America around the hit. Rail jobs, bucket Ts, Sting Rays, and old Studebakers crowd the song titles, each polished into two minutes of guitar and high harmony. While the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean mapped Southern California through cars and surfboards, the Nashville group sent the same stacked harmonies toward the dragstrip with the bright compression of AM radio.
The original wheel-centered cover has the avid close-up gaze of a dealership brochure, turning the hubcap and split grille into pop graphics. On blue vinyl, BeatRocket’s 2017 edition gives the album’s mechanical fantasy one more gleaming surface.
