Originally released as part of the Spring 2019 Vanguard Collection, the “54” are bold Super 70s statement specs that channel the unapologetic glamour of legendary Manhattan nightclub Studio 54.
Handcrafted in Italy from 100% beta titanium with a sprawling mono-lens, eye shields, and a highly sculptural brow bar and temples handcrafted from plant-based acetate, these are charismatic combo-frames that recall the glittering collision of pop art and high fashion that was New York.
One of the scene’s spiritual foundations was Studio 54, the groundbreaking nightclub that defined the era with its exclusive, celebrity-filled parties and its inclusive atmosphere on the dance floor. College buddies Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager had transformed a former midtown TV studio into a pleasure palace for the senses, taking the Warholian ideal of celebrity to new heights.
“The key of the success of Studio 54 is that it’s dictatorship at the door and a democracy on the dance floor,” Warhol astutely observed.
Though only existing for three years (1977-1980), Studio 54 became a symbol of late-1970s NYC in its glamorous heyday. Studio 54 was the Versailles of the late-twentieth century, the spirit of disco made flesh, composed of beautiful people living their best lives, free to lose themselves in fantasy and decadence. Once inside, guests swanned through a mirrored corridor, underneath crystal chandeliers that brought them directly to the dance floor, where guests like Grace Jones, Diana Ross, and Nigel Rogers could be seen, as well as heard.
Every night at Studio 54 was a trip through the looking glass into a magical wonderland, whether rubbing shoulders with Liza Minnelli, Truman Capote, Elizabeth Taylor, and Calvin Klein or writing a page in history, as Bianca Jagger did on her birthday when she sat on top of a white horse being lead by a tall hunk wearing nothing but gold glitter…
