Cartier trinity lighter, c. 1980

1,850 USD

A drawing-room instrument wrapped in the green delirium of malachite, this Cartier Trinity lighter compresses one of the decorative arts' most coveted stones into a form small enough to disappear into the hand. Dense rings, rivered bands, and dark copper-born shadows drift across its polished surfaces, each face revealing a new, strange geography. One side recalls antique marbled paper, another the monumental tabletops and fireplaces that saw wafer-thin veneers of malachite assembled into seamless mosaics that concealed extraordinary labor beneath an effortless surface.

Polished 24k gold-plated fittings contain the malachite without competing for attention. The Trinity ring, introduced by Louis Cartier in 1924, is the lone ornamental flourish, quietly linking the lighter to one of the maison's most enduring creations. Throughout the twentieth century, Cartier extended that same sensibility beyond the jeweler's bench, producing lighters, cigarette cases, writing instruments, and desk accessories with the same exacting attention as its celebrated jewels. This Trinity lighter belongs to that distinguished tradition, carrying one of the house's defining emblems into an object intended for pocket, palm, and drawing room alike.
